Wilcox Arizona

Willcox owes it's initial existence to the Southern Pacific railroad which first chugged through the area in 1880. The renovated historic Southern Pacific Depot is just one of the attractions in the revitalized downtown area of Willcox. The Rex Allen Museum and the Cowboy Hall of Fame pay tribute to the city's most famous son, Rex Allen, and the ranching influence. The Chiricahua Regional Museum houses many artifacts and exhibits of the area, as well as the Chiricahua Apache Indians, their great Chief, Cochise, and renegade Geronimo.

Willcox serves as a starting point for your journey through the Magic Circle of Cochise. The road leads you to the ghost town of Dos Cabezas, as you head for Apache Pass and the Fort Bowie National Historic Site. This outpost marks the battles of the Indian Wars in the late 1880's. The Chiricahua National Monument presents an amazing variety of plants and animals, with more than 20 miles of hiking trails to explore the towering spire rock formations. Cochise Stronghold stands as a monument to one of the greatest Apache Chiefs, Cochise who often hid in this box canyon. The Cochise Stronghold includes a 5-mile hiking trail, rock climbing, petroglyphs, and picnic and camping facilities.

Willcox has plenty of things to keep everyone busy from outdoor recreation such as hiking, biking, camping, golfing; bird watching and beautiful sunsets. Historic downtown Willcox is home to the oldest continuely operating store in Arizona, along with antique shops, museums, unique restaurants, specialty shops, and great people. Browse our web pages for detailed information on tourism, retirement, economic development, or special events.

Every winter thousands of Sandhill Cranes migrate to the Sulphur Springs Valley. Cochise Lakes, adjacent to the Willcox Playa, is a verdant wetland that attracts a variety of bird species including ducks and migratory shore birds. Sparrows, quail and many birds of prey also populate the area.

On the outskirts of Willcox, visitors will find "u-pick farms", which offers pick your own produce opportunities from squash and pumpkins to apples and chilies. The season is July through October.

Willcox blends rough and tumble country with friendly small town attitude. From the solitude of riding a bike where wildlife roams freely to playing a round of golf with your neighbors, Willcox has a sense of community that is proud of its past and mindful of the future.

The air is unpolluted, the water is pure, the temperatures are moderate, the sunsets spectacular and retirees are welcome.

Willcox is located directly on Interstate 10, 80 miles east of Tucson, Arizona. Willcox, at an elevation of 4,167 feet, has mild year-around climate, relatively inexpensive land and housing, and pleasant rural lifestyles.

Cochise County is unparalleled in historical, cultural, scenic and recreational features. From the rugged Dos Cabezas Peaks and the Chiricahua Mountains to Cochise Stronghold in the Dragoon Mountains (part of the Coronado National Forest), the dramatic changes in scenery and wildlife will both delight and amaze visitors. These awe-inspiring mountains and mystifying deserts were once the homeland of the Chiricahua Apache Indians, and it is from the great chief Cochise that the county gets its name.

Visitors are encouraged to "Travel the Magic Circle of Cochise", a journey through the area that will bring its rich history and unique and dramatic geology to life. The Cochise Information Center, operated by the Willcox Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, has information on the tour

History
Willcox began as a small cow town and was once known as the "Cattle Capital" of the nation. Cattle are still an important aspect of the economy, and a large livestock auction is held annually in Willcox.

Row crops such as cotton and small grains are significant as well. The diversification of agriculture has resulted in the establishment of apple orchards, pistachio and pecan groves, ostrich farms, grape vineyards and two hydroponics tomato green houses.

A well-established U-Pick-it industry provides fresh produce for all of Southern Arizona and Southwestern New Mexico. There are dozens of U-Pick farms in the Willcox area. A variety of different fruits and vegetables can be harvested, and has become a tradition for many families to travel to Willcox annually to pick their own fresh produce. Tourists, as well as traveling business people also have an important impact on the city's economy.
