Nogales Arizona

Nogales is in Southern Arizona. It is in Santa Cruz County. The town is located on Interstate 19, right on the Mexican border. You can get to Nogales from Phoenix by taking Interstate 10 south out of town and into Tucson. Once you are in Tucson, you will take Interstate 19 south to the Mexican border and the town of Nogales.

Nogales is a wonderful place to experience the Mexican culture and traditions. Nogales is the county seat for Santa Cruz County. It is a very popular port of entry for U.S. travelers. More than a billion dollars of produce pass through Nogales up into the United States and Canada. Nogales is an important retail and wholesale trading point.

Today Nogales has a population of 20,328. The town sits at an elevation of 3,865 feet. The climate in Nogales is delightful all year round. The lows in the winter are near 63 degrees and the highs in the summer are around 92 degrees. The average rainfall is 15.5 inches a year. Nogales has low humidity and endless sunny days. Nogales has a special old-world charm and a friendliness that is hard to match.

There are some attractions you will want to see during your trip to Nogales. The Pimeria Alta Historical Society Museum is located in the old city hall building. This museum shows visitors the rich history of the area through artifacts and displays. Tumacacori National Historic Park is north of Nogales and is steeped in history. The park tells the tales of the early Spanish and Indian people.

Today you will see the adobe chapel and graveyard. It is a must see on your visit. Nogales, Mexico is the sister city of Nogales, Arizona. Many visitors include a day trip across the border to Mexico to see the town of Nogales. Visitors will enjoy shopping and Sonoran food.

Nogales has a special flavor all its own and it is worth investigating.

Nogales, the Spanish word for "walnuts," is a crossroads for an ancient trade route that ran from Guaymas and Hermosillo north into the interior of what is now the United States. Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Sonora are really one city separated by a fence-the International Border-first erected by Nogales, Sonora to keep out the rowdy Americans.

Nogales, Arizona is a tapestry of cultures woven through history-a culture unique to the City. In the 1690s the Spanish established missions in this area, which, at the time was inhabited by the Pima people. In 1821, Mexico ceded from Spain and the Nogales area became part of Mexico. In 1854, the Gadsden Purchase placed Nogales into the United States. In 1880, Isaac and Jacob Issacson founded Nogales with a border trading post. In 1882, the railroad arrived, assuring the town a place on the map.

Come! Shop in Nogales! The people in Nogales, Sonora do! Downtown Nogales is an award-winning Arizona Main Street community that includes over 140 establishments in an historic setting. Many of the historic buildings house wonderful retail stores with variety to please everyone. It's a great place to shop and, when you drop, enjoy a newly painted bench in the park. Over the course of the last year, young artists from Nogales have been painting the town just for you. Enjoy the shopping and the history, stop and look at the Woolworth Company building, located at 34-46 Morley Avenue, which was constructed in 1917, and is the only neoclassical commercial building in Nogales as well as the only original terra cotta facade in Nogales.

Stop by the Pimeria Alta Museum, the Old Town Hall, located at 136 North Grand Avenue. In 1914, the Nogales Volunteer fire Department pitched in and built the Old Town Hall on Grand Avenue, which is now home to many historic treasures. Designed by the renowned Tucson architect Henry O. Jaastad, the building was constructed with all of the amenities-steam heat, sewer, electricity, and running water. The entire ground floor can be explored. Historic Nogales Main Street HISTORY

Thousands of years ago, before European explorers ever dreamed of sailing across the Atlantic, Nogales was part of a migratory path and trade route called Spain's El Camino Real (The King's Highway). Much later, regiments of armor-clad Conquistadors forayed north along this very valley in quest of precious metals and gems. Today missions built by the Spanish colonials still dot the valley's landscape.

Back in those days, ranchers in the area were besieged by Apaches raiding their herds of well-fed cattle. One of our local ranchers, Pete Kitchen used to say, "Tucson, Tubac, Tumacacori, to hell," when returning to Nogales from a cattle drive from Tucson. Today, you'll find Nogales a far more hospitable place. Where Pet's ranch once was, is now Pete Kitchen's Outpost, a restaurant. It's actually one of the original 1853 structures of the old Kitchen homestead.

Fray Marcos de Niza arrives in the Ambos Nogales territory in 1539.

Life on the border would not be complete without the influence of Pancho Villa, whose army occupied Nogales, Mexico in 1914 during the Mexican Revolution. The U.S. military's garrison in Nogales swelled to over 10,000 mostly black soldiers of the highly decorated 25th Regiment mostly detached from Washington, D.C. The military buildup and related business growth attracted many businesses to Nogales, some of which remain today.

Old City Hall was built in 1914, a year before Arizona became a state. It was used as the Office of the Mayor, the Sheriff's office with two holding cells, and the Fire Department. Now, it houses the Pimeria Alta Historical Society and has fascinating displays of how things used to be.

An early street scene in downtown Nogales during the 1920s. Architectural buffs will have a heyday in Nogales. Of course, there's the predominant Sonoran Style. But we also have fine examples of Queen Anne Cottage, Second Empire, Spanish Colonial, Pueblo Revival, Mediterranean Style, and Bungalow Style all within the downtown area.

Be sure to take a stroll back in time along historic Morley Avenue. Many of the stores, like Capin & Company and Brackers Department Store, established in the early 1900's, are run by descendents of pioneer merchants, and are still thriving.
