Gilbert Homes and Real Estate for Sale in Maricopa County, Arizona

Gilbert: Like many other communities in the Phoenix metropolitan area, the town of Gilbert is experiencing rapid growth while balancing the needs to protect its past while promoting its future. Over the past two decades, the community has nearly doubled its population every five years and is now home to approximately 127,000 residents. Located 20 miles southeast of Phoenix in the “Valley of the Sun,” Gilbert prides itself on offering residents safe neighborhoods, quality education, a host of leisure activities and a booming business community. The entire city center is undergoing revitalization. The Heritage District - the community’s original town core - is being reborn with a mix of retail, office and commercial business and the restoration of historic buildings and residences. A big part of the city’s trail system is being incorporated into the redevelopment plan. The city’s trail system includes trails on the Western Canal and the Union Pacific Railroad alignments. Improvements to the Western Canal trail were completed in 1999. An unimproved horse trail is located along the railroad alignment from Gilbert Road to the Wildlife Sanctuary northwest of the District. The Heritage Walk utilizes the Western Trail and features key sites in the district such as the Historical Museum. Other new developments include the Gilbert Town Center, a 66-acre commercial development that features shopping, restaurants, an entertainment complex and 20,000 square feet of office space.

Gilbert public schools are highly rated. Achievement test scores at the elementary, junior high and senior high levels have exceeded both national and state averages over the past several years. Several schools have also been recognized as having an outstanding fine arts program and a comprehensive interscholastic activity program.

Higher education is available through both Arizona State University - East Campus and the Chandler-Gilbert Community College where residents can locally pursue two-year college degrees, and bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. There are numerous private and public colleges and universities located just a short drive away in Phoenix.

Not only does Gilbert provide the best in education, it also provides its residents with the best in recreation. The selection of things to do is endless. The Parks and Recreation Department oversees numerous activities, team sports and events. Freestone and Crossroads parks provide community lakes and playgrounds for the entire family to enjoy. In addition, there are miles of walking, running, biking and horseback riding trails located throughout Gilbert.

Neighborhood parks within planned communities offer features including everything from playgrounds and pools to tennis courts and clubhouses. For the golf enthusiast, there are four golf courses in Gilbert and over 25 courses within a 15-minute drive from town.

The history of Gilbert dates back to 1900. The Arizona Eastern Railway was asking for donations to establish a rail line between Phoenix and Florence. A rail siding was established on the property owned by William Gilbert. The town that eventually sprung up around that siding eventually became known as Gilbert. The community became a center for growing and shipping a variety of livestock and crops. During World War I, the cavalry needed to feed their horses and Gilbert answered the demand. At that time, the town became known as the Hay Shipping Capital of the World. In 1920, the town’s 500 citizens incorporated and Gilbert was officially born.

Gilbert strives to maintain its small town atmosphere while at the same time progressively plans for the future. The city hosts several annual special events such as the Easter Eggstravaganza, Halloween Carnival, So Long to Summer Fest, Summer Concerts in the Park and the Christmas tree lighting. Gilbert is a city with all the elements of a wonderful place to call home.
